We Always Need to Purge!
Purging Defined: deleting or getting rid of non-required items. Purge Process: freeing up space! If you don’t get rid of anything then you are just going to be rearranging instead of organizing. Your space will revert back to a mess in no time.
We talked about the Bathroom and that was pretty easy to purge.
So today we’ll talk about another easy place to purge is the KITCHEN since many items are not sentimental.
The first step is to determine how much time you have for the task at hand. Try setting a timer for 30 minutes which will give this a little urgency and can help you make gut decisions rather than going back and forth about whether or not you really need the item.
If you don’t immediately say “I use this” or “I love this” it can probably go. Spending time thinking about that “someday” situation that you may or may not need it is not going to help anyone.
How do you know what to get rid of? Anything that is not useful or necessary should be trashed, donated or recycled. When you start have a box ready for donations, recycle and a couple bags for trash.
Let’s talk about some items that you’ll NEVER miss:
- Logo glassware from some kind of event that is shoved in the back of your cabinet or taking up space on a shelf – donate
- Promotional cheap plastic water bottles or reusable coffee mugs – promo items – donate
- Any kitchen tool you have more than one of: 6 sets of tongs; 3 sets of measuring cups and spoons; 10 spatulas and 3 can openers
- Odd ingredients used once and never again. Donate if not expired
- Plastic food containers you washed to reuse – trash or recycle
- Dishwasher warped plastic food containers – no longer fit
- Restaurant condiments, menus and plastic utensils – recycle
- Bakeware or cookware not used in years do not need your prime spot in the kitchen – donate them or at least remove the item from the kitchen, place them in clear containers and put in a storage area
- Same for fancy china you might use 1x a year or that platter that you only use for Thanksgiving or Christmas, remove them and place in a storage area.
- Dish towels stained and holey – get a fresh set. Use old ones for rags.
- Small appliances unused for 2 years such as waffle iron, fondue maker or other gadgets such as an avocado slicer, spiralizer, cucumber slicer because we had to have all of the latest gadgets – we need to be honest with how we really cook and eat – donate
- Mismatched Tupperware
- Warn out cooking utensils – trash along with unmatched items. We tossed old Tupperware and bought glass sets. So much easier to match up. We only use glass in the microwave to cook now.
- Unused serveware. Keep the ones you use the most and donate the rest. I think I had 10 but only used probably 3 when we host parties.
- Items that don’t belong – the kitchen tends to be a dumping ground for random items. Relocate those unrelated to kitchen activities.
After you get rid of things your space will finally have room to breath! You’re taking intentional steps to create a space that functions efficiently and works for you.
The obvious items – anything expired – we’ll cover next week along with how long we can keep certain foods before purging. Part 2 – Kitchen
I hope you are inspired to start purging and clearing up some space.
